Wolves in Westerholtz [Hart & Mocking]

THE WESTERHOLTZ FORTNIGHTLY

WOLVES IN WESTERHOLTZ?

This past week, there have been reports of no less than three attacks on local cattle, each
ending with a loss to our farmers. Speculation attributes these attacks to a lone werewolf,
whom residents have reportedly heard howling in the woods beyond the ridge. However,
there has yet to be any evidence to substantiate this suspicion. None of the bovine
carcasses have been recovered. Residents are urged to take caution after dark and to
fortify their cattle fences until the matter is resolved.

A search party comprised of volunteers will gather in town square a sennight from today
and sweep the surrounding woodlands for any signs of werewolf activity. Interested
individuals should bring their own supplies and arrive early.

The road was empty and dark, crawling with a low fog that had blown in from a nearby swamp. The traveling man’s hood had drawn a deep shadow across his face. Despite the full moon at his back, he did not appear to be in a hurry.

Westerholtz was only about twenty more minutes ahead. It hadn’t been the most arduous journey he’d ever made, but he’d be glad to see it done. His traveling pack was starting to get light. The man’s footfalls carried him quietly along the road. On either side trees flanked him, creating pockets of darkness from which he was sure creatures were watching.

In his line of work, they were always watching.

The man considered what lay ahead. The town was large according to the papers he'd been given; a place of farming and occasionally logging. It was under the jurisdiction of a feudal lord to the north-- a lord whose poor correspondence as of late had attracted the attention of the Queen's Hand Clerical Order. Not that the townsfolk needed to know that. For as long as he could go undetected, he would simply be Herr Kross Hundmann, a weary traveling preacher.

Hopefully the townsfolk had duller wits than whatever was stalking the woods tonight. Kross came to a pause and stood there expectantly, hands slipping inside his traveling cloak.

The woods’ critters always seemed jittery during the full moon. There was something unnatural about the dim silvery light and drained colors of the scenery. With exception of some leaves rustling and distant hooting, the woods were eerily quiet.

A peculiar figure lay draped in shadows, its dark eyes fixated on a lone goat. It sits, waiting patiently as the unsuspecting goat moves closer. With a swift jump it finds itself on top of the goat, jaws biting into the tender flesh on the back of its neck. The beast begins to tear chunks meat as hot blood runs down the corpse. It finishes the meal quickly, leaving half of the goat uneaten.

It continued to wander through the forest walking on its hind legs, almost like a human. Only, it looked canine in nature, with thick fur covering its whole body and a short muzzle, still soaked with blood. The werewolf was rather small for its kind and resembled a dog more so than a wolf. It is said that werewolves’ forms resemble their human appearance, but the similarities are the most subtle. One could hardly guess based off appearance alone that such a monstrous form belonged to a young girl called Klara who has appeared in Westerholtz not more than a year ago. As she went further into the forest, she started removing the blood from her face. After a while, she stopped walking and turned her head in the direction of the town. With what seemed to be a mischievous smile, she got down on all fours and started sprinting.

As she ran she slowed down her pace gradually, eventually coming to a leisurely trot. Any elegance was now gone as she started taking big playful strides, occasionally lurching forwards. A low growl emerging from her throat formed a melody. She neared the path going to the town and before she got a chance to relax any further, she noticed a person walking on it. Klara stopped in her tracks, watching this stranger who decided to lurk in the woods on a full moon’s night. By now, the townsfolk were wise enough not to stray too far during nights and foreigners rarely came to Westerholtz. Surely, one would have to have a very good reason to be out. Klara watched as the stranger stopped and reached into their cloak. She started creeping forwards, hoping to discoverer what they were doing. It was not every day they got visitors like this. She also hoped she hasn’t created too much noise.

The tip of a silver stake emerged from the man's traveling cloak. It was slender, almost knifelike, and fit neatly into his hand as if tailored for him. Which of course, it had been. The clerical order spared no expenses these days. His hand fell to his side, weapon catching the moon's gleam.

"I am very busy," he spoke from his hood's shadow, turning slowly in place to scan the treeline. "Please be on your way."

His voice quivered between pitches. Some sort of disguise charm, likely attached to his cloak; the same reason he smelled only vaguely human and made little noise when he walked, prints faint and nondescript. Whoever this stranger was, he did not wish to be known.

Silence hovered between the man and the woods. Something was out there, but it had gone very still and quiet. He waited.
