♦ A roleplay originally on Swizeo ♦

Note to readers: Caesar, Cornelia, Blue Eyes, Milo, Maurice, Rocket, Tinker, Ash, Koba, Grey, Stone, Luca, Lucky, Sparrow, and Buck are all 20th Century Fox's property from the Planet of the Apes reboot franchise, I'm just borrowing them for the roleplay. Any other characters I play here are my OCs. Evan will take over playing Ash from this point forward. Any other characters he plays are his OCs.

Since the original thread will be lost when Swizeo shuts down, a quick summary of the plot so far;

After being experimented on in laboratories, a colony of apes (chimpanzees, bonobos, orangutans, and gorillas) gained human-level intelligence and escaped their captivity, lead by a chimpanzee named Caesar. The drug that was tested on them had unexpected side effects for humans, and started a deadly plague that wiped out most of the world's human population. While the humans plunged into chaos, the apes thrived, creating their own village in a redwood forest. (Plot taken directly from Rise/Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, not our creation. Very condensed to avoid spoilers.)

Roughly a decade after the escape and two years after the remaining humans achieved relative peace, a few more isolated cases of what was dubbed the Simian Flu popped up in the human colony, the parents of a young boy named Felix. After the death of his parents Felix fled into the forest, where he was discovered by the apes and adopted into their tribe to be raised by the royal famil, as their youngest son Milo had recently passed away. Not all apes were happy with this decision. This lead to tension between Caesar, the leader, and the bonobo Koba, the head warrior and one of Caesar's advisers on the Council, who had seen unfathomable amounts of human cruelty during his life as a captive. Caesar's son Blue Eyes was also initially unhappy with the decision, fearing that the human boy was meant to replace his beloved younger brother, but has warmed up to Felix little by little over time.

The tension came to a pique after humans came looking for the little boy and were captured, taken before Caesar, who let them leave with their lives, sending them back to the human city empty handed. Koba challenged Caesar's leadership following his decision to spare the humans, but was no match for the chimpanzee. Koba disappeared for weeks following his loss, but returned to the village in extremely poor health at the insistence of his allies; Grey, Stone, and Joao.

Felix has been adapting well to his new life, finding friendship in a young chimp named Seed, and a young bonobo named Feather. He has grown to accept Cornelia and Caesar as parents and Blue Eyes as a brother, and has made great progress in learning sign language, the apes' foremost means of communication. But with winter approaching, survival will be tested for both ape and human, both in terms of finding food and keeping warm.

Autumn was always a time of stress and worry in the village. The apes had only a couple months to collect and stockpile food for the winter, which meant all hands on deck as far as hunting and foraging. Although Cozy was normally a forager, every male chimpanzee that was of age was called upon to join the hunts. The females were the foragers in autumn. This was all by Caesar's choice; he explained it by saying he was raised in a human world, and male humans were given the more dangerous jobs while human females were given safer things to do. It sounded strange to Cozy... He didn't know humans in that respect, but he knew that female apes were just as capable as males. It did seem to work though, and no apes complained about the arrangement. Female apes seemed somehow more observant, Cozy did have to admit that. They made excellent foragers. Himself? Cozy was skilled at finding food that couldn't fight back, but...

He did not need the added stress of Seed's energetic outbursts right now, knowing that he would be expected to join the afternoon hunt in less than an hour...

"Behave! I need my energy for hunting!"

The signs almost had a desperate edge to them and although Seed wouldn't understand how stressful a time fall was, he was perceptive enough to realize that Cozy meant this, and with a huff, he marched himself over to the closest berry bush on all fours and plucked one or two to toss into one of the baskets and pouches that had been brought with them.

The older chimpanzee heaved a sigh, more in relief than anything else, and sat himself down next to his two charges. Felix was coming into his own, as much as such a small human could, and he had become skilled at foraging for berries and climbing trees for fruits. He'd had the summer to integrate and practice, learning their ways and adapting to them without much complaint. Even the majority of the colony had come around, and very few apes still looked at the boy as they previously had. Some were harder to convince, of course, but it was progress.

Cozy turned his eyes away from the two younglings to glance at the sky, knowing from the sun's positioning that they would need to return to the village soon. He wanted nothing more than to skip out on hunting, but he couldn't be selfish. Even if he rarely made a kill himself - he could help finish the job if another started it - he contributed to the survival of the colony just by participating. Another sigh escaped his lips. It couldn't be helped; he couldn't get out of it.

"Time to... leave."

The words were reluctant and he made no attempt to hide it. He didn't enjoy hunting and it was no secret.

Seed stuffed one last berry into his mouth before padding to his older brother and attaching himself to his chest. Cozy gathered up the baskets and pouches and slipped into the makeshift straps that would keep them held to his body at an angle that would prevent the fruit from spilling out. That done, he had to collect Felix onto his back and they could return to the village.

Felix had settled into how things worked more and more and though he did still struggle on occasion with some things, overall he had adapted. Still a bit shaken by the appearance of the humans before, he had taken to what he now saw as his family as fully as he could and was eager to help in whatever way he could. Which meant improving the skills that he thought made him more of an ape.

Other things were becoming true though, like the fact that his clothing was beginning to wear out from being worn all the time and in much rougher conditions than anything he had ever faced in the city. Only his sweater was perservering without holes and even then, it was beginning to wear thin in places, leaving him worried about the special contents of his pockets. He didn't want to leave any of it in his nest during the day, finding the thought of any of his special things being unprotected unimaginable, so he continued to bring them with him, always checking that a hole hadn't formed in the pockets they were in.

Now, however, he was distracted from that by the much more diligent berry picking he was doing. While Seed just fooled around a lot, Felix knew that he had to work to prove himself. He wasn't just accepted in the same way, despite everything that had happened and the choice he had made. And he also just wanted to make everyone happy and the easiest way to do that was by doing his job.

So he was a bit reluctant when Cozy indicated it was time for them to leave, and he stuffed a few berries into a cheek before finding the now familiar spot on Cozy's back, clinging with tight fingers and now toughened feet and toes.

Somewhere along the way, all of this had become more familiar to him and almost comforting, even if he was unused to all of the time he had to try and occupy, with Cozy and most of the others who would normally keep track of him off hunting.

With every bit of cargo, living and food in tow, Cozy set off down the worn path to the village. It wasn't very long before he noticed the telltale sounds of ape commotion, a chorus of hooting in more voices than Cozy had numbers. Something was obviously happening, something enough to get at least some of the chimps riled up. It didn't sound like enough of them were upset to indicate a pressing problem, but even so, Cozy quickened his pace to something closer to a trot, hoping berries didn't bounce and spill from the baskets as he went.

He could hear curious chirps from his younger brother, huffing to him to try to keep him from letting go and running off to investigate on his own. Whether this sounded like a big issue or not, he didn't want Seed running headlong into the problem without thought. That would be something the young ape would need to learn as he matured, hopefully sooner as opposed to later, though Cozy knew he couldn't expect miracles. He could only hope for the best.

When he arrived at the village gates it became clear that any ape that had been outside of the village was now filing back in, curious as to what was going on. He pushed his way through them carefully, many letting him through simply because he had a baby clung to his chest, others not so willingly moving to sacrifice their vantage point. The apes were surrounding something, something that had been brought to the village center for Caesar to inspect. So this was at least somewhat important, then. Not every little find was presented to Caesar, there were simply too many things to be found for that, however important or unusual things were always brought before him.

Now those who let him through did so because he had Felix with him, that much became clear when their eyes fell on the boy before they moved. Something to do with Felix? Had the humans come back? No; not enough apes seemed upset for that to be the case. But what else could it be?

When Cozy finally reached the inner edge of the circle, he found his answer. A band of young chimps about Blue Eyes' age had found something, and although Cozy missed most of their explanation, he didn't need it.

Piles of human clothes were spread out before Caesar, who squatted and ran his fingers over a red sweater with what could only be nostalgia painted across his face. Cozy didn't need to measure to know. These clothes were sized for Felix. The humans had to have left them so the boy wouldn't get too cold over the winter.

"Must be... for... Felix."

Cozy motioned as he spoke for the little human to go and investigate the gifts that had been left for him in the forest, holding Seed firmly to his chest as he did so.

For Felix, any excitement was a cause for worry.

Nearly every situation so far that had triggered even a minor commotion in the colony had made him upset and scared and insecure. He didn't want to feel bad like that again. He just wanted to feel how he felt when he was gathering with Cozy, or learning to fish with Ash and Blue Eyes, or lying in his nest in the moments before being awake and being asleep, when everything in the world seemed okay and peaceful and he didn't have to even slightly worry about his life before.

So as Cozy worked his way towards the front of the gathered group, Felix hunkered down as flat as he could against the chimpanzee's back, eyes squeezing shut, mouth a thin line. He didn't want to have something else bad happen, and he couldn't even touch his smooth rocks or dried leaves or anything while this was happening, because he was stuck holding onto Cozy and he had learned his lesson about letting go before; he wasn't ready to take another tumble and certainly not in the middle of a group of excited apes.

He only opened his eyes once Cozy had stopped moving and it took a few seconds for his eyes to focus in the new lighting, everything blurry until it cleared and brightened.

Clothes?

He remembered for a few moments how his mother or father would take him to pick a few new things out of piles of carefully maintained, fixed and recovered clothing. He always felt a bit intimidated, not sure whether or not he was supposed to make any real choices or if they were just there for show. He always wound up with similar things, and even now he could see that all of this stuff was the kindof thing that his mother would have called 'sturdy' and 'practical'. Not that he really understood what those meant, but it wasn't stuff that would rip in the woods. He slid off of Cozy's back carefully, not entirely sure if he wanted the older ape to be right about it. If it was for him, that meant that he didn't have to keep wearing this stuff but it also meant that the humans had been near the forest, and they weren't supposed to. And even if he wasn't a part of them anymore, he didn't want them to get hurt because they did something wrong. He didn't want anyone else to die...

Either way, with too much attention on him he crept towards his father, at once a bit afraid and a bit curious, though now with free hands to plunge into his pockets and reassure himself with the familiar edges of his little treasures.

Caesar looked up from the sweater that so reminded him of one of his own from his childhood when he noticed Cozy's approach, and Felix's. He waved the boy forward with a gentle movement of his hand, rising to his feet as he watched his newest son so nervously walk to him. He was sure that he understood why Felix was apprehensive, and his thought process, if Caesar was correct, was appropriate. Humans had entered the forest, something Caesar had forbidden very clearly. But they had done so not with negative intents in mind. They had brought Felix clothes to ensure that he survived the winter, something that Caesar found admirable. Humans were still looking out for their own, even if Felix was no longer part of their colony.

But the humans could use this to their advantage. They could hope to desensitize the apes to their presence, to make them drop their guard. Caesar was certain that Koba would say as much, if he weren't still keeping his distance. It was something that he knew he needed to consider, however it wasn't the conclusion he was going to jump to. He understood human love, the bonds between human family, and wasn't necessarily surprised that they would still want to look out for Felix. They had, afterall, come looking for him once already. Part of him wondered if this was the last they would see of them, or if the humans intended to make a habit of these gift giving visits. What he did know was that he would need to station more apes throughout the forest to keep watch, apes that could be trusted not to cause trouble where trouble was not already present.

For now, though, he could focus on the positives. Felix wasn't going to freeze in the winter. He signed carefully and a tad slowly to make sure Felix would be able to follow them.

"Humans bring gifts for you."

Cornelia and Blue Eyes approached from somewhere on his left, their presence announced by the female hooting in a quiet, questioning manner. Caesar turned to them and nodded towards the clothing, addressing them as well as Felix with his next sign.

"Warm."

Cornelia nodded her understanding, Blue Eyes pulling his brows together ever so slightly as he tried to work this out. Caesar's eldest son had little to no experience with humans outside of Felix, and it was little wonder that he didn't understand. He hadn't been conditioned to be sensitive to the fragility of the human race in the same way that Caesar had, but he was smart enough to work this out without much else in the way of explanation, but it became obvious that it wasn't the clothes themselves that he was concerned with.

"Humans in forest?"

"Think they come only to give gifts to Felix. Send scouts to be sure. Go find orangutans, tell them to go search for humans, but not attack, only watch."

Blue Eyes' face lit with determination, a flash of joy barely masked. He nodded with a puff of his chest and leapt down into the village, delighted beyond words to have such an important job. It warmed Caesar to know that his son was growing into his role; a white-tail, he no longer was. How had time passed him by so quickly? Was it not only yesterday that those eyes opened to the world for the first time?

Caesar couldn't allow himself to get lost in thought, however, and turned his attention back to Felix.

"Not worry. This is a... good... thing."

Felix really didn't want to worry but he couldn't help feeling just a little bit of the uncomfortable, tummy twisting sensation even when his father reassured him.

However...

He was right in that it would be warm, and gift or not he appreciated it. Maybe it was a gift, though... gifts had always been saved for special occasions, like the holidays he forgot the names of, and his birthday. Rarely had it been clothing, though. Usually it was small toys that he had clung too so desperately like the treasures he now carried in his pockets. Which he could now put in different, safer pockets, and bring with him. And there was more than one of things in these piles.

Cautiously he touched the fabric with his small hands, first making contact with a green t-shirt and then a pair of pants, before his fingers encountered the edge of the red sweater. This was more clothing than he had ever had at one time before and that made him a little uncomfortable. But also happy, somehow... he swallowed and looking for a brief moment at the gathered apes, noting when Blue Eyes dashed off. His mother was now there and he almost wanted to ignore the clothing in favour of going to her, because he didn't understand what was going on, necessarily.

Answers were something he usually got when it came to what the humans did and wanted though, even when he had lived with them.

The relief she felt upon seeing the piles of clothing was immeasurable. It had been a worry of her's, ever since the crisp of autumn had set in and reminded all of them that cold weather was soon to come. Even young apes struggled with the cold, but they had fur, mothers to cling to, nests to warm them. Felix was bald beneath his clothing and he seemed so fragile at times, even if he was growing more accustomed to an outdoor way of life. Caesar had walked her through the process of what he called sewing, and Cornelia had tried, along with Sparrow, to make clothing out of dried animal pelts. Their attempts hadn't been successful, thick fingers lacking the precision to work a crude needle through the hides well enough to accomplish anything. The failure nearly felt like defeat, like she was not living up to the role of being Felix's mother, but the humans had bestowed a gift upon them that could not be measured.

"Much clothes, enough for winter, keep Felix warm like fur."

The relief was present on her face and she knew that her mate noticed, the soft smile he offered to her not leaving any doubt. But she could also tell that he was wrought with new concern, even if he was trying to hide it. She understood, humans in the forest had meant nothing but bad things before, with one or two exceptions. Certain apes were liable to create trouble if the humans didn't, they both knew that. Caesar was determined to keep peace between apes and humans, but Cornelia had her doubts. They were better off living separate from one another, with Felix being a special case. She would never express that with Felix around, though; she knew he still had a difficult time feeling as though he fit in, and she didn't want to say anything to make that harder for him.

"Change into new clothes, I wash old clothes in river."

As she signed, a certain unmistakable figure leered from a shadow cast by the great tree, and she huffed through her nostrils. Koba was unhappy, and she wasn't surprised. He had recovered much of his muscle tone and his confidence, the sorry state he had fallen into a thing of the past, and it was only a matter of time before he was back to his old ways. She still wished, at times, that Caesar would banish him. Caesar always said that it wouldn't be safe, that he would do more damaged unsupervised in the forest, and she could understand that thought. It didn't stop her from wishing that he would stop looming over her family, though.

He must have noticed her watching him, because he moved away. Even the scraggly and bitter bonobo knew that Cornelia was not a female to be messed with, she would dish it out just as violently as the males would, if it meant protecting her family. She was tempted to snort at his backside, but she refrained, turning her attention back to her mate, as he addressed the crowd around them.

"Humans bring... gifts. Nothing... to fear. No danger... to apes."
