Mocking's Editing/Proofreading Corner

Post by Mocking on Mon Dec 14, 2015 9:19 am

Writing a thing for school or otherwise and want someone to look it over? Feed me words.

I'm just a student, so I can't promise miracles or anything, but it's always good to have a different set of eyes read your work before you hand it in, since they tend to be better at spotting mistakes.

Guidelines:

1. You can post your stuff here or PM it to me (non-fiction or fiction are both fine)
2. Proofreading just means I'd go over grammar and punctuation; editing means I'll actually make suggestions on things to add/remove/switch around
3. If you want me to edit something, please let me know what your end goal is (I can't suggest how to improve a paper if I don't know what you're trying to accomplish with it)
4. I'm fairly busy these days, so please don't send me the entire manuscript for your new screenplay

Resources

PaperRater will grade your paper based on language used/check for plagiarism
The Oatmeal makes a lot of comics/infographics on the proper application of grammar and punctuation, which is handy for more visual learners
Thesaurus and its corresponding dictionary function are lovely

I'll add to this as I find other sites.

I don't have anything right now, but this is a lifesaver! My English teacher insists on having a first draft, a personal edit, at least one 'peer reviewed' edit, and then the good copy. And I don't talk to anyone in my class so I've been having to BS it or get my mum to read over my work.

Glad to help!

Ugh, that was my problem in creative writing class. I was mortified of anybody reading my stuff. I did all my edited drafts with my non-dominant hand and then got someone in the class to just write their name on top so it looked like they'd done it *shot*

@Mocking

Would you be willing to look over fanfiction as well?

@Kadin

For sure! Proofreading would be no problem. I might not be familiar with the fandom, though, so if you want actual editing done my advice might be skewed by that.
